The use of a superlative in this quote reiterates the extent of the treachery that she is willing to conduct in order to achieve her desires. This is supported further by the quote “fill me from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty”. The use of symbolism in this quote help to show the juxtaposition in the personas that Lady Macbeth exhibits to the world and that which she shows to only her husband. In act 1, scene 5 Lady Macbeth says to her husband that he must “look like th’innocent flower but be the serpent under’t”. The ruthlessness embodied by Lady Macbeth is expressed throughout the play. The use of this declarative sentence makes it clear that under these circumstances it is Lady Macbeth who holds the power and not her husband. This is very contradictory to gender norms at the time. In this quote she is referring to the King (Duncan’s) murder. One of the most striking instances of this is in act 1, scene 5 when Lady Macbeth tells her husband “to leave the rest to ”. She reinforces many of these masculine traits such as ambitiousness, a thirst for power and the ability to take control of a situation in various quotes. However, she also depicts some character traits typically associated with men during the Elizabethan era. On one hand, she is seductive and utilises her feminine charm. Lady Macbeth has very conflicting personas in the play. Lady Macbeth has been depicted to be an intelligent, ambitious and ruthless character, this is very unlike the female stereotype present in 16th century England. Shakespeare’s strong imagery and use of symbolism help to denote the persona that Lady Macbeth shows to the public along with her true self.
